Tips & Tricks
1. Daily distance & total duration of your selfdrive
Take into account an average of 300 km per day. In 15 days, you will have traveled about 4500 kilometers. Do you prefer a more relaxed pace or are you traveling with children? Don't exceed an average of 250 km per day. Distances are expressed in miles, 1 mile = 1.6 km.
2. Type of vehicle
Although cars are generally larger than in Europe, we still recommend that you choose a car that is spacious enough for your self-drive. You spend so much time on board that a little extra space is welcome... And don't forget the temptations of shopping, which you're bound to succumb to.
Make sure you don't leave anything on the rear window during your excursions and make sure all your personal belongings fit in the trunk. For a family with 2 children, we recommend a standard minivan or SUV. Please note that upgrades on site are usually expensive.
3. Picking up your rental car
The employees of the rental companies have an incentive on the extras they sell when picking up the vehicle. Be aware of any upgrades that may be offered to you and be aware of the insurance included in your rental agreement. We will provide you with a detailed overview of the insurances included when you receive your travel documents and advise you to read them carefully.
4. Parking
Outside of major cities, parking is easy even for a minibus or SUV. In the city, as in most European cities, parking is very expensive and it is better to park in a municipal parking lot in order not to lose too much time. You should expect to pay about $40 for a full day's parking.
5. Fuel
Most vehicles run on unleaded gasoline. The price ranges from $3 to $5 per gallon. 1 gallon = 3.8 liters. Therefore, count on a budget of € 0.70 to € 0.80 per liter. Still cheaper than at home.
General conditions
The minimum age requirement for the driver is 21 years (25 years for some categories). The driver must be in possession of a national driving license valid for at least one year and a credit card in his name. The mentioned prices can only be guaranteed on the moment of reservation.
Not included: RSN (Roadside SafetyNet), fuel (except for the first fill-up in comfort & comfort plus formulas), a possible 3rd driver, supplements such as drop-off fees, young driver (-25 years old), possible increase of taxes included, VAT (+/- 20%) on these supplements will be invoiced on the spot.
