Rio de Janeiro: Good to know
Must do's in Rio de Janeiro
Cristo Rei: No visit to Rio can be considered a full success without a visit to the imposing statue of Cristo Rei on Corcovado Mountain. The statue stands over 700 m above the city and is lit at night. 360°C views, from sunrise to sunset are simply spectacular.
Copacabana: undoubtedly the most evocative beach in the world. The four-kilometre long white beach is a haven for surfers who are only too eager to demonstrate their skills to the many spectators.
Carnival: when February comes around the energy of Rio de Janeiro is at its best. Scantily clad samba dancers and ornate floats attract the attention of millions of lookers-on.
Rio de Janeiro: Insider tips
Do as the locals do and shop your fruits and vegetables at the Feira da General Glicerio-market. Here you can find the best seasonal fruits and delicious Brazilian specialties like pastel (pastry with a spicy filling). Want to stop and pause? Sip a caipirinha? Listen to the street musicians? Go for it!
Feijoada: the national dish of Brazil is a stew of beans and pork served with rice and cabbage. Tasty!
An hour's drive from Copacabana lies Grumari, a pristine sandy beach tucked in a nature reserve and embedded in the Atlantic rainforest. It is a favourite spot amongst locals, perfect to unwind from the city bustle. There is so commerce here so head to the nearby fishing village of Guaratiba for fish from the sea to your plate.
