San Francisco: Good to know

Must do's in San Francisco

Alcatraz: from 1934 to 1963 Alcatraz was the most infamous high security prison. Locked up here were famous gangsters such as Al Capone. The isolation cells and stories about escape attempts will no doubt make you shiver and shudder. The island is only accessible by ferry.

Golden Gate Park: this immense park is located next to the Golden Gate Bridge. Here you can visit the Museum of Modern Art, the Japanese Garden and the California Academy of Sciences recognisable by the greenery on the roof.

Fisherman's Wharf:  the old fishing port of San Francisco. You will find lots of food stalls and shops. For those who are fond of seals, head to Pier 39. You will have plenty o time to focus your camera lens as they lazy around in the sun!

Cable Car: it would be an utter shame to leave San Francisco without having made a ride on one of its famous cable tram, which defy the steepest streets of San Francisco.

San Francisco: Insider tips

If you are a trained sportsman, or woman, why not explore San Francisco by bike, one of the favourite pass-times of late Robin Williams. Plenty of Bike rentals are available across the city, especially around the quays. Cycle across the Golden Gate or tackle a steep slope only to enjoy a fun descent afterwards!

If you feel like stepping back in time and see the San Francisco of lore, head for The Mission, the oldest district in town. Here you will find casual coffee shops, trendy restaurants, fashionable vintage boutique, latter-day book shops and Mexican supermarkets.

How to explore San Francisco?

To visit San Francisco's highlights in a smooth and affordable way it is advisable to use the MUNI metro which runs partly underground and partly above ground.

The cutest an dmost picturesque way to get from point A to B is by the world-famous cable tram. Check out their routes and keep in mind that due to their popularity queueing is not exceptional.
