La Réunion

La Réunion: welcome at out home, welcome at your home.

The île Bourbon got its current name in 1793: La Réunion, the "Island with the Thousand Faces." Together with Mauritius and the Rodrigues Islands it makes up the archipelago of Mascareignes. From the air, Réunion is a small, green dot between Mauritius and Madagascar, but a dot of unequalled class. Life here is the best of two worlds: living like a god in France and experiencing the fun of a kid creole, hip throwing rhythms included. La Réunion’s interior is stunningly untouched and features on the UNESCO World Heritage list while all along the 207 km coastline the clear blue waters of its lagoons and reef-protected bays captivate the heart of all lookers-on. And not only nature is infinitely grandiose here.

For foodies La Réunion is a gourmet paradise because the Reunionnais are Burgundians just like the Belgians. The food portions are large and the ingredients super fresh. Enjoy an apéritif with a rum arrangé followed by the traditional carri or a gigantic choice of seafood and fish platters; what else can you expect on an island. You can visit vanilla farms, rum distilleries and try all produits péï (regional products). For those who are sporty, La Reunion guarantees pure adrenaline: from 40 m below sea level to 3000 m above it. Rafting on the Marsouins river, diving and snorkeling to shipwrecks or even scuba diving or fishing all year round, canyoning, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, you name it. If you are the farniente type, then this tropical island is mainly synonymous to laid back Creole hospitality and joie de vivre.

Everywhere music is made by percussion and kayamb - an instrument that is also on the UNESCO world heritage list. Everybody knows everyone and that brings about lots of partying and celebrations, a large number of refreshing Dodo beers and listening to all the ladelafé gossip in the camion bar. Life can be wonderfully simple and exuberant at the same time, right?!

Climate

Réunion is especially attractive for tourists thanks to its tropical climate. The summer in Réunion runs from December to March. This is opposite to our seasons as La Réunion is located in the southern hemisphere. The summer months are much wetter than the winter months. Along the coast there is about 150 to 250 mm of rain per month during the winter months while along the Piton de la Fournaise volcano in the south-east of the island rainfall and mist are common even daily features. It is said the area has 2 to 3 times as much rain in one month as Belgium in a whole year. Actually this region ranges among the wettest areas in the world.

The temperatures on Réunion along the coast during daytime fluctuate from 15°C in winter to 31°C during the summer months. Inland the temperature drops readily 10 to 15 degrees on the highest peaks. Those who want to discover nature here must therefore bring warm and waterproof clothing, as temperatures regularly drop 12 to 15 degrees between sea level and 3000m altitude year-round.
