Day 1 - Mandalay
Your guide welcomes you at the airport and takes you to the hotel. After lunch you go explore this cultural capital. Your first stop: the Mahamunipagoda and her beautiful Buddha statue. Next on the programme is the Mahagandayon pagoda. You visit a local weaving mill. The day ends in Amarapura near the famous U Bein bridge, the longest teak bridge in the world.
Day 2 - Mandalay (B)
Day at leisure. Why not go explore the ancient capitals of Ava and Mingun on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River (at surcharge: €152/p.p.EXMDL002). We suggest you do it by boat. Start upstream at Mingun where you visit the old town and the Mingun Pagoda. Then follow the current to Ava. The 3-hour boat ride is the perfect time to nibble a simple picnic lunch. You explore the former capital of Ava and its ancient ruins by horse carriage.
Day 3 - Mandalay - Bagan (B)
After breakfast you drive to Bagan by car. This gives you the opportunity to discover the pristine interior of the Ayeyarwaddy valley. On the way to Bagan you make a stop at the Paleik snake temple, famous for its 3 pythons which guard the temple and get rewarded for doing by receiving food and a wash every morning. In the immediate vicinity you will discover unspoilt, overgrown ruins. "Mini-Bagan" is rarely visited, yet a true gem. From Paleik you head to Popa where you will visit the Temple of the 37 "nats" or spirits ... a mysterious temple on a mountain top with magnificent views of the countryside.
Newly introduced on your programme is a stop at the Minzontaung Wildlife Sanctuary. The Burmese star tortoise is an endangered species originally from the dry zone in Myanmar and in urgent need of protection. The Minzontaung Wildlife Sanctuary has been doing an excellent job in breeding tortoises and setting them back out in the wild. You overnight in Bagan.
Day 4 - Bagan (B - L)
In the morning you walk up to one of the temples to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and admire the impressive scenery dotted with pagodas and shrines. Today you will visit the finest among them in the company of your guide: Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani and Thatbyinnyu. Lunch is served at a local restaurant, and around 4 pm you exchange your car and driver for a horse drawn carriage ride to Pyathagyi. From the pagoda you watch the sunset while you sip a refreshing drink.
Day 5 - Bagan (B)
Day at leisure. What better way to conclude your stay in Bagan than with by attending a romantic sunset on the Ayeyarwaddy River? During this absolutely recommended excursion (€ 45/pers. EXBGN001) you will sail to a sandbank in the middle of the river and sip a cocktail while you admire the stunningly deepening colours of an unforgettable sunset.
Day 6 - Bagan - Heho - Kalaw (B - L)
Today you board your domestic flight to Heho. Here your local guide takes you on a pleasant trek through the beautiful, wooded countryside of Kalaw. At the end of your hike, you prepare your lunch in the company of a local mountain tribe. Then you visit a project for the conservation of elephants, under the experienced guidance of Burmese youngsters. Here the animals are safeguarded from poachers and danger. You help prepare their meals, feed and bathe the elephants. A unique experience! You journey back to Kalaw aboard a pick-up truck.
Day 7 - Kalaw - Lake Inle (B - L)
Which is the most original and fun way to explore the shores of the famous Inle Lake? By bike of course! Your starting point is Thaung Lay Lone. Climb on your steel horse and go for a 3-hour leisurely ride along sugar cane fields and the village of Khaung Dine. En-route you can enjoy captivating views of the lake. Upon your arrival at Indein, you visit the famous ruins. You hop on a boat to transfer to your hotel.
Day 8 - Lake Inle (B - L)
What a day to look forward to ! You spend your time on and around the idyllic and world-famous Lake Inle. You go and explore its waters aboard a private vessel and witness amazing floating gardens, discover local crafts and sail along the famous ‘leg rowers’. You visit a weekly traditional and nomadic market and meet Shan and Pa-O hill tribes do their shopping. Afterwards you visit the most sacred place in the region, the Daw Oo Pagoda Phaung and its five gilded statues of Lord Buddha.
Day 9 - Lake Inle - Heho - Yangon - Kyaiktiyo (B)
Your morning flight to Yangon is programmed today. At your arrival your guide welcomes you and takes you to Kyaiktiyo. En-route you stop at Bago to visit the Monastery Kha Khat Wain, one of the largest in the country. Bago was once the capital of the Mon kingdom. At Kyaiktiyo you board a truck that will take you to one of the most fascinating and strange places of pilgrimage in the world, the famous Golden Rock. A huge rock with a small pagoda built on top, seems to balance on the edge of a precipice, but in perfect balance. This place attracts many pilgrims. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
Day 10 - Kyaiktiyo - Mawlamyine (B - L)
Today you'll travel through the Mon State towards the capital Mawlamyine. Upon arrival you visit the Mon museum and then take a walk along the colonial buildings of the city. You also visit the neighbouring town of Hpa Ouk, famous for weaving traditional Mon sarongs.
Day 11 - Mawlamyine - Hpa An (B - L)
The day starts by a visit to the monastery of Seindon Mibaya. You travel on to Ni Paya where you enjoy magnificent view of the city and river. A boat ride on one of the longest of Myanmar, the river Thanlwin, takes you to Hpa-An with intermediate stop at the village of U Na Auk. On the way back you can enjoy splendid views of the limestone cliffs and rice paddies. Lunch is served on board. You stop one last time in the village of Lim Pa where you can get acquainted with the local communities of the Kayin, Shan, Mon, Bamar and Pa'o. Arrival at your hotel is scheduled in the late afternoon.
Day 12 - Hpa An - Yangon (B - L)
After breakfast you get some true action as you paddle aboard your kayak and accompanied by your guide-bosun to the charming village Lakkana and Muku. You will delight in the beautiful peaceful surroundings made up of karst rocks and rice fields. To get some extra energy you stop over at a Kayin village where a fresh fruit juice is served. Waterproof or easy dry clothes are a plus. You return to your hotel for a shower before leaving for Yangon. Along the way you'll visit yet the caves of Kawgun with clay Buddha statues from the 7th century, the time of the Mon kingdom. You arrive at Yangon in the late afternoon.
Day 13 - Yangon (B - L)
Your guide welcomes you and takes you on a quest to the most important monument of the city, the Shwedagon. This 2500 year old temple complex is the main shrine of Myanmar, eight central gilded stupas, each 99 feet high, and 64 smaller stupas rich. Should you wish to do so, you may bring offerings. Lunch followed by an afternoon exploration of the colonial buildings of downtown Yangon. You round of your discovery by tea at the Rangoon Tea House.
Day 14 - Yangon (B)
