Dishes include rice and curry, pittu, Kiribath, wholemeal Roti, String hoppers, wattalapam (a rich pudding of Malay origin made of coconut milk, jaggery, cashew nuts, eggs, and spices including cinnamon and nutmeg), kottu, and hoppers. Jackfruit may sometimes replace rice and curries. Traditionally food is served on a plantain leaf.

Middle Eastern influences and practices are found in traditional Moor dishes, while Dutch and Portuguese influences are found with the island's Burgher community preserving their culture through traditional dishes such as Lamprais (rice cooked in stock and baked in a banana leaf), Breudher (Dutch Holiday Biscuit), Bolo Fiado (Portuguese-style layer cake), and Gumbo Lillas (Dutch style honey coated sweet treats).

  • All Belgian nationals* travelling on a Belgian passport (children and babies included) must be in possession of an international e-passport (electronic) containing min. 2 blank pages,  valid for at least 6 months on arrival and a tourist visa. This visa must be purchased beforehand via the official site http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/. Price: 35USD. For travel to The Maldives an international passport suffices. 

  • Travelers with a non-Belgian nationality and / or travelers travelling on a foreign passport are invited to spontaneously report this matter to the Connections travel consultant and shall contact their respective embassy (s) or Consulate (ate) to obtain the latest updates concerning all current travel requirements and documents.

Tropical climate. Colombo and the coast have average temperatures of 27 °, 20 ° Kandy, Nuwara Eliya 16 °. Cooler in the central, higher areas. The southwest monsoon occurs between May and September, the northern and eastern monsoon between October and January.
