Like the Sony Walkman and instant ramen noodles, the shinkansen or bullet train tops the list of Japan's major innovations of the past century.
The bullet train is the best way to reach the main cities of the country in record time. If you take at least 2 train rides during your trip, you can save a lot of money with the Japan Rail Pass.
If you book your JR Pass at Connections, you will receive a voucher and an information booklet. Within 3 months, you can take your voucher to an exchange center in Japan to collect your real JR Pass. You can then choose the starting date (within 30 days). This pass is only available for foreign travelers.
Validity
The JR Pass is valid on all JR trains in the country (Shinkansen, express, local, except on Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen)
JR Pass is valid on Tokyo Monorail, some Aoimori Railways trains and JR local buses.

How to use it
At the station, you go to the platform access control of the chosen train. You have to show your JR-Pass to the ticket inspectors who will let you pass (you can't scan your ticket).
If you take the train outside the peak hours and high season, you will easily find seats. No need to make reservations. Just show your JR Pass and sit in the seat of your choice. If you wish to make a reservation, you must go to a reservation desk at a station. With your JR Pass you can reserve seats free of charge. It is not possible to make reservations on local trains. The JR Pass can be used all year round 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Please note that it is difficult to travel without a reservation during peak periods. During these periods, we recommend that you reserve your seats on the desired trains when you validate your JR Pass. This service is only available on site after activation. (more information in your Travel Shop)
Green class
Green Class entitles you to ride the Green Car Wagon on all Shinkansen trains and some other fast trains. It is comparable to our 1st class. The seats are wider and there is more legroom. The price-quality ratio is particularly interesting for comfortable travel. It is recommended to buy this pass if you have planned your trip to Japan during the high season. There are usually fewer people in Green Cars and therefore more space. If you are traveling in Green Class, reservations are mandatory. However, if you forget to make a reservation, you can always travel in "ordinary" class without a reservation. *The number of Green Cars in a train depends on the configuration of the train
