Highlights of Argentina
A road trip through Argentina offers the opportunity to discover the most impressive sights of this vast country. The vibrant capital Buenos Aires, with colourful neighbourhoods such as La Boca, invites you to experience authentic tango culture. In the north, the spectacular Iguazu Falls leave a lasting impression, while colonial Salta takes you back in time. In the south, Patagonia amazes with the Perito Moreno Glacier and the snow-capped peaks of El Chaltén. Near Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, you sail through the historic Beagle Channel. This destination of striking contrasts offers unforgettable experiences for every traveller.
Touring Argentina
When planning an individual road trip through Argentina, the possibilities are endless. You can opt for a fully mapped-out itinerary covering national parks and major cities, or choose a tailor-made journey where you decide which hidden gems to explore. Due to the country’s vast distances, domestic flights are often essential to combine different regions. Many travellers choose to combine Argentina with neighbouring Chile, crossing the Andes for an adventurous and scenic experience. In the north, an extension to the Iguazu Falls on the border with Brazil and Paraguay is highly recommended.
Exploring Buenos Aires
As the starting point of your Argentine journey, Buenos Aires is a vibrant metropolis not to be missed. Known as the “Paris of South America”, the city welcomes you with broad avenues, stately architecture and lively neighbourhoods. On Plaza de Mayo, you’ll feel the heartbeat of Argentine history, while San Telmo charms with antique shops and spontaneous street tango performances. Enjoy an authentic Argentine steak in a traditional parrilla and end your evening with a professional tango show. Buenos Aires blends European elegance with South American passion, offering world-class museums, beautiful parks and a buzzing nightlife that continues well into the early hours.
Patagonia and the Glaciers
Southern Argentina, known as Patagonia, is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Los Glaciares National Park, with the iconic Perito Moreno Glacier at its heart, offers an unparalleled spectacle of towering ice formations. From El Calafate, you can take boat trips past immense glacier walls, where massive chunks of ice crash dramatically into the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino. Hikers will find paradise in El Chaltén, with trekking routes leading to spectacular viewpoints overlooking snow-covered peaks. In this pristine wilderness, you may spot condors, guanacos and even the elusive puma. A journey to Patagonia is an experience you will never forget.
Combining Argentina with Chile
A perfect extension to your Argentine adventure is a trip to neighbouring Chile. From Argentine Patagonia, you can easily cross into the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park, renowned for its distinctive mountain peaks and turquoise lakes. In the north, the desert town of San Pedro de Atacama offers a fascinating contrast to Argentina’s green plains, with geysers, salt flats and moon-like landscapes. The wine regions of both countries also offer excellent tastings, where you can discover the differences between Argentine Malbec and Chilean Carmenère. By combining both countries, you experience the full diversity of South America in a single journey.
Best Time to Travel to Argentina
Due to its vast size, Argentina features several climate zones, meaning the best time to travel depends on the regions you plan to visit. For Buenos Aires and central Argentina, spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are ideal, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. To visit the glaciers of Patagonia, the summer months (December–February) are recommended, when temperatures are milder and daylight hours are longer. The northern regions around Salta and Iguazu can be visited year-round, although summers can be hot and humid. For wine lovers, the harvest season around March in Mendoza is a special time, featuring numerous wine festivals and tastings.
