Highlights of Cambodia
During your round trip through Cambodia, you’ll discover an impressive blend of historical landmarks and natural beauty. The temples of Angkor are undoubtedly the absolute highlight of your journey. This vast temple complex, including the world-famous Angkor Wat, reflects the grandeur of the ancient Khmer Empire. In Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s vibrant capital, you’ll gain insight into the country’s recent history at the moving Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. The contrast with the laid-back atmosphere of coastal destinations such as Sihanoukville and the paradise island of Koh Rong Samloem completes the experience. Battambang, with its colonial architecture, and the authentic river and jungle experience at the Cardamom Tented Camp are also among the must-see highlights.
Temples of Angkor
The temples of Angkor rank among the most impressive monuments in the world and are the absolute highlight of any Cambodia round trip. Spanning more than 400 square kilometres, the complex was built between the 9th and 15th centuries by successive Khmer kings. During your visit, you’ll explore not only the iconic Angkor Wat but also the mysterious stone faces of the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm temple, made famous by the movie Tomb Raider. The best time to visit the temples is early in the morning, when temperatures are cooler and crowds are smaller. Take time to admire the intricate bas-reliefs that depict scenes from Hindu mythology.
Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s capital is a fascinating mix of historical splendour, tragic past and modern-day vibrancy. Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers, Phnom Penh offers a wealth of attractions. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are among the city’s most impressive sights, with their golden roofs and beautifully maintained gardens. To understand Cambodia’s recent history, a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek is essential, though emotionally intense. After these impactful visits, you can relax at one of the many cafés along Sisowath Quay or explore lively markets selling authentic Cambodian products.
Koh Rong Samloem
This idyllic island off the coast of Sihanoukville provides the perfect contrast to the cultural highlights of your Cambodia round trip. Less developed than neighbouring Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem offers a more authentic island experience. Its pearl-white beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand are ideal for relaxation. M’Pai Bay is the island’s lively hub, while Saracen Bay is known for its more upscale resorts. During your stay, you can snorkel among colourful coral reefs, kayak along the coastline or simply enjoy spectacular sunsets. In the evening, if conditions are right, you may witness the magical phenomenon of bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water.
Cambodia Round Trips
A round trip through Cambodia offers countless ways to explore this diverse country at your own pace. Whether you choose a full two-week itinerary such as the “Best of Cambodia” or prefer a shorter journey, there are options for every type of traveller. Individual round trips allow you to enjoy a well-organised journey while retaining flexibility. Many travellers combine Cambodia with neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam or Laos for a broader Southeast Asia experience. The best time to travel is during the dry season from November to April, although the rainy season transforms the landscape into a lush green paradise. Using local transport such as tuk-tuks and remorks adds an authentic touch to your Cambodian adventure.
Travel to Cambodia
A trip to Cambodia is an unforgettable journey of discovery. This captivating Southeast Asian country combines a rich cultural heritage with breathtaking natural scenery. During your travels, you’ll not only visit world-famous temples but also experience the warm hospitality of the local people. Despite its turbulent history, Cambodia has shown remarkable resilience. Cambodian cuisine is a delightful discovery, featuring dishes such as amok (fish cooked in coconut milk) and lok lak (marinated beef). For a complete experience, combining cultural exploration with coastal relaxation is ideal. From luxury journeys to adventurous escapes, there is a perfect way for everyone to discover this extraordinary country.
Battambang
Cambodia’s second-largest city is surprisingly tranquil and offers an authentic experience away from the busier tourist centres. Battambang is known for its well-preserved French colonial architecture and surrounding rural landscapes. One of the highlights of a visit is undoubtedly a ride on the famous bamboo train, locally known as the “norry.” This unique form of transport consists of a wooden platform on wheels powered by a small motor, travelling through beautiful rice fields and small villages. In the surrounding area, you’ll also find ancient temples and the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau, where you can learn more about the dark period of the Khmer Rouge. At sunset, you can witness a spectacular natural phenomenon as millions of bats emerge from the caves.
