Hotels & Meals
Argentines have a reputation for being the world's biggest meat consumers! And that reputation is enforced during as good as any meal you’ll see, as meat if not eaten straight, meat is bound to be of the main ingredients. The Argentine cuisine is a mix of French, Spanish, Italian and Indian influences. There is not really a specific Argentine national dish, and yet, the country is famous for its asados, Argentine barbecues. It is almost a Sunday ritual!
What also pos up regularly are empanadas and dulce de leche. Empanas are savory filled pastries which are very popular throughout Argentina and the whole of Latin America. Dulce de leche is a kind of caramel paste.
Besides the traditional Argentine wines, fernet (Italian liquor but very popular in Argentina) & mate are the people’s darlings. Mate is a green herbal drink you sip withh a special straw, often in group among family, friends or even colleagues. Sooner or later, we bet it will show its true nature during your trip!

Climate
Argentina is a vast country and covers most of the southern half of the South American continent. This makes it very difficult to talk about one type of climate. The northern regions around Iguazu enjoy a tropical climate while southern Patagonia has a more maritime climate which is characterized by cold and wind. generally speaking winter runs from late June to early October; summer from December to March.
The north of the country of Chile enjoys a moderate desert climate while the south bathes in a polar climate strongly wet and cool. Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and cold, wet winters.
The Natural Wonders of Patagonia
Patagonia is one of the most untouched regions in the world, where nature still reigns supreme. In Argentina, you’ll discover Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with no fewer than 47 glaciers, including the famous Perito Moreno. This glacier is one of the few in the world that is still advancing. The cracking of the ice and the dramatic moments when massive chunks break off and crash into the water create an unforgettable experience. Further north lies El Chaltén, where the iconic Fitz Roy mountain range, with its sharp peaks, dominates the landscape and attracts hikers from around the world.
The Culinary Traditions of Argentina and Chile
A journey through Argentina and Chile is also a culinary adventure. Argentine cuisine is famous for its asados (barbecues), where world-renowned beef is grilled to perfection. Be sure to try a bife de chorizo or a full parrilla dinner. Argentine wines, especially Malbec from Mendoza, are the perfect pairing. In Chile, a different culinary tradition awaits, with fresh seafood taking center stage. Try empanadas de mariscos or curanto, a traditional dish cooked in an underground oven. Chilean wines, particularly Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon, rank among the best in the world. Both countries also share a love for mate, a traditional herbal infusion you should definitely try.
Buenos Aires, the Paris of South America
Buenos Aires, Argentina’s vibrant capital, is known as the “Paris of South America” thanks to its elegant architecture, wide boulevards, and lively cultural scene. The city is divided into distinctive neighborhoods, each with its own atmosphere. In San Telmo, you’ll find nostalgic streets filled with antique shops and tango halls, while La Boca surprises with colorful houses and street performers. A visit to Buenos Aires isn’t complete without experiencing tango — this sensual dance is both an art form and a way of life. Enjoy an authentic tango show with dinner in a traditional milonga. Plaza de Mayo and the presidential Casa Rosada reflect the country’s rich political history.
Torres del Paine, Chile’s Crown Jewel
Torres del Paine National Park is undoubtedly Chile’s natural highlight. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Patagonia showcases nature at its most impressive: towering granite peaks, turquoise lakes, vast glaciers, and dense forests. The iconic “torres” are the heart of the park and a true pilgrimage site for hikers. During your visit, you may spot diverse wildlife such as guanacos, flamingos, rheas, and even the elusive puma. The famous W Trek is one of the world’s most celebrated hiking routes, but the park also offers many accessible trails for less experienced hikers.
Practical Tips for Your Trip to Patagonia
Good preparation will make your journey through Argentina and Chile even more enjoyable. The weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable, even in summer (December–February), so dressing in layers is essential. Windproof and waterproof clothing, as well as sturdy hiking shoes, are a must. It’s best to exchange currency in advance or in larger cities, as ATMs can be scarce in remote areas. Distances are vast and travel times may be longer than expected. Domestic flights can save time, but should be booked well in advance, especially during peak season. When crossing the border between Argentina and Chile, a passport is always required, and border procedures can take time.
