Travel Documents
  • All Belgian nationals travelling on a Belgian passport (children and babies included) must be in possession of an international e-passport (electronic) containing min. 2 blank pages, valid for at least 1 day after their return home. All travellers to Canada must purchase an eTA or electronic Travel Authorisation online via the official website cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp prior to entering Canadian territory via its airports. Price: 7 CAD or +/- 5 Euros. Your eTA is valid for 5 years and linked to your passport number. This implies that as soon as your passport expires, so does your eTA.

  • To save time at Customs and Immigration in Canada, you can download the CanBorder eDeclaration app before your arrival. You will then receive a QR-code that remains valid for 24 hours. Thanks to the scanning of the QR code, you do not have to re-enter your data on the screen at the Customs counters. You can download via the Apple Store app or Google Play app.

  • Please note: A credit card is required upon check-in at the hotels and also when renting a car. All cross-border travellers with the USA must on top be in possession of an international passport and an ESTA. The digital passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the set date of your return flight. The electronic travel authorization must be purchased online by means of a personal credit card via the official link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ (14 USD on 20JAN2015). Your ESTA is valid for max. 2 years. Should your international passport expire within that period, so does your ESTA as it is linked to your passport number. We strongly recommend you to print out the Esta- or Eta permit and to have it on you while you travel to avoid problems.

  • Travellers with a non-Belgian nationality and / or travellers travelling on a foreign passport are invited to spontaneously report this matter to the Connections travel consultant and shall contact their respective embassy (s) or Consulate (ate) to obtain the latest updates concerning all current travel requirements and documents.

The National Parks of the Rocky Mountains

The Canadian Rockies are home to no fewer than seven stunning national parks, each with its own unique character. Banff National Park, Canada’s oldest, offers spectacular scenery with turquoise lakes such as Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. Jasper National Park, the largest in the Rockies, boasts endless hiking opportunities and the world-famous Icefields Parkway. Yoho National Park impresses with Emerald Lake and natural rock bridges, while Kootenay National Park surprises with Radium Hot Springs and Marble Canyon. Further south, Waterton Lakes National Park forms a unique cross-border link with the U.S. Glacier National Park.

Wildlife Watching in the Canadian Wilderness

The Canadian Rockies offer excellent opportunities to observe impressive wildlife in their natural environment. On your journey you may encounter grizzly and black bears, moose, elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Jasper National Park is renowned for its large populations of moose and bears, while Banff and Waterton Lakes are prime locations for spotting mountain species. For the best wildlife experiences, we recommend heading out early in the morning or at dusk. July and August provide the best conditions for spotting wildlife, spring is the season of newborn animals, and autumn is marked by the spectacular elk rut.

The Most Beautiful Lakes of the Rockies

The Canadian Rockies are world-famous for their improbably turquoise lakes, which you’ll have the chance to admire throughout your trip. Lake Louise, with the iconic Fairmont Chateau on its shores, is undoubtedly the most famous and offers scenic hikes such as the Tea House Trail. Nearby Moraine Lake, surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks, is perhaps even more striking with its intense blue hue. In Jasper National Park, don’t miss Maligne Lake with its photogenic Spirit Island. Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park lives up to its name with a dazzling emerald green color, while the quieter Waterton Lake is a perfect spot for kayaking among dramatic mountain cliffs.

The Most Scenic Routes for Your Self-Drive

This Canadian Rockies self-drive takes you along some of the world’s most spectacular scenic roads. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is often considered one of the most beautiful drives in the world, featuring highlights such as the Columbia Icefield, Peyto Lake and countless waterfalls. The Bow Valley Parkway provides a quieter alternative to the Trans-Canada Highway, with more chances to spot wildlife. In Yoho National Park, the Yoho Valley Road is a must, while the spectacular Going-to-the-Sun Road in adjacent Glacier National Park takes you over breathtaking mountain passes. The Meadows in the Sky Parkway near Revelstoke offers sweeping panoramas, and don’t miss the winding route through Kootenay National Park leading to Radium Hot Springs.

Outdoor Adventures in the Rockies

The Canadian Rockies form the perfect backdrop for unforgettable outdoor adventures during your journey. In summer, countless well-marked trails suit all levels, from easy nature walks to challenging alpine hikes. Don’t miss the popular Johnston Canyon in Banff or the Valley of the Five Lakes in Jasper. White-water rafting on the Kicking Horse River near Golden delivers an adrenaline rush, while kayaking on the crystal-clear lakes offers a calmer way to connect with nature. Mountain biking in Revelstoke or horseback riding near Banff are other fantastic ways to explore the landscape. For a unique perspective, book a helicopter flight or ride the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain.

Best Travel Time for Your Journey

For this 15-day Canadian Rockies tour, the period from June to September is ideal. July and August bring the warmest temperatures, averaging between 20–25°C, perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. These months are also the busiest, so be sure to book accommodation well in advance. June is a beautiful month with blooming alpine flowers and waterfalls at their most spectacular due to snowmelt. September offers quieter parks and dazzling fall colors, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler nights. Mountain passes and high-altitude trails are still accessible, and wildlife spotting is excellent thanks to bears preparing for hibernation and elk in rut.
