Trekking in Peru: landscapes, cultures and altitudes
Peru is a true paradise for hikers and trekkers. From rugged high mountains and deep canyons to glacial lakes, cloud forests and remote villages, the country offers an exceptional variety of trekking routes. The best-known trails lead into the Andes and towards Machu Picchu, but those who look beyond discover a much broader and richer terrain.
In the Colca Canyon, you walk through one of the deepest gorges in the world, along ancient agricultural terraces, while condors soar high above. In the north, around Huaraz, the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra offer alpine treks past turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks and quiet mountain passes. Elsewhere in Peru, lesser-known but equally impressive routes provide deep immersion in nature, altitude and authenticity. Each region has its own rhythm, light and character, making trekking in Peru an intense and meaningful way to truly experience the country.

Treks to Machu Picchu: classics and alternatives
The most iconic treks in Peru undoubtedly end at Machu Picchu. The classic Inca Trail, with three nights on the route, and the short one-night “baby” Inca Trail are world-famous and attract thousands of hikers every year. Their historical value is unique, but this also makes them the busiest and most regulated routes.
Travellers seeking more space and variation will find outstanding alternatives. The Salkantay Trek, completed in three or four nights, crosses glaciers, high-altitude lakes and cloud forest, offering even greater landscape diversity than the Inca Trail. There are also versions with comfortable dome accommodation, where nature and added comfort go hand in hand. For those wishing to combine trekking with refinement and gastronomy, luxury options such as the Mountain Lodge treks offer overnight stays in stylish lodges. What all these routes share is that Machu Picchu is not merely a final destination, but the culmination of a journey through ever-changing landscapes and altitudes. The journey itself becomes just as memorable as the arrival.

Along the way, glaciers, turquoise mountain lakes, tropical vegetation and remote villages unfold day after day.
The Salkantay Trek is a challenging yet accessible adventure, immersing you in raw nature and vast landscapes. Each day reveals a new setting, every step feels like a journey into the soul of the Andes. This is trekking at its finest: physical, powerful and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Climate
Peru has a temperate climate. Exception is the tropical Amazon region where the average temperature is around 28° C. For dry coastal strip that rarely sees rain and the temperature often varies between 14° C and 22° C the most favorable months are October to April. For the Andes and Amazon that period runs from April to October. Indeed, the Sierra enjoys a spring climate. Temperatures drop significantly depending on the altitude (between 8° and 18° C lower) and travel to Cuzco and Machu Picchu is not recommended during the months of January and February!
