Discover the Versatile North of Portugal
Northern Portugal offers an unparalleled variety of landscapes to fully explore during this tour. In the Douro Valley, where terraced vineyards climb along the riverbanks, you can taste authentic port wine straight from the producers. Small villages like Amarante and Lamego exude timeless charm with their granite churches and peaceful squares. Inland, you’ll discover Peneda-Gerês National Park, where hiking trails lead you past waterfalls, ancient oak forests, and crystal-clear lakes. This northern region of Portugal effortlessly combines natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural richness that often remain overlooked on traditional tours.
From Porto to Lisbon via the Most Scenic Routes
The journey from Porto to Lisbon doesn’t have to be just a drive—it’s an adventure along routes that each tell their own story. Take the coastal route, and you’ll pass charming fishing villages like Aveiro, known as the “Venice of Portugal,” with its colorful moliceiro boats. Via Nazaré, famous for its gigantic waves, you eventually reach Lisbon. The inland route leads through medieval towns like Viseu and Castelo Branco, where you’ll experience authentic Portuguese traditions. A third option is the cultural route via Coimbra and Tomar, where you can visit one of Europe’s oldest universities and the mysterious Templar fortress. Each route reveals a different facet of Portugal’s rich soul.
Culinary Highlights on Your Portugal Tour
A tour through Portugal is also a gastronomic journey that will delight your taste buds. In Porto, be sure to try the savory francesinha, an indulgent sandwich with various meats, cheese, and a spicy beer sauce. The Douro Valley is not only famous for wine but also for top-quality olive oil and sweet almond pastries. Around Coimbra, enjoy the traditional leitão à Bairrada (suckling pig), and in Alvados, sample cheeses and honey from local producers. In Lisbon, fresh seafood such as grilled sardines and the famous bacalhau (cod) await in countless variations. Don’t forget to finish each meal with a pastéis de nata, the iconic Portuguese custard tart that tastes best in its homeland.
Best Time to Visit Portugal
For this 8-day tour from Porto to Lisbon, spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October) is ideal. During these periods, enjoy pleasant temperatures between 20–25°C, perfect for exploring cities without the oppressive summer heat. In spring, the Douro Valley hills are covered in fresh greenery and blooming almond trees, while in autumn, the vineyards turn golden during the grape harvest. High season (July–August) brings higher prices and temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C, making city walks less comfortable. Winter months are quiet and mild along the coast, though inland near Arganil, cold nights are possible, rewarded with authentic winter festivals and virtually tourist-free sights.
Highlights Along the Portuguese Coast
Although this tour mainly takes you inland, the Atlantic coast beckons with its pearly-white beaches and picturesque fishing villages. From Porto, it’s easy to take a day trip to the chic Foz do Douro or historic Matosinhos with its fresh seafood restaurants. On the way to Lisbon lies Nazaré, a traditional fishing village made world-famous by record-breaking surf waves. Slightly further south is the medieval town of Óbidos, completely walled and filled with whitewashed houses accented with bright colors. From Lisbon, the elegant seaside town of Cascais is within reach, where you can stroll along the promenade among luxury yachts and stately villas. These coastal towns perfectly complement your tour, showcasing another aspect of Portugal’s versatile character.
