South Africa
A land of endless contrasts

Reading time: 5 min

Start your adventure among the wildlife

South Africa is a destination where you can combine an incredible variety of experiences in a single trip. One moment, you’re driving through vast landscapes where the horizon seems endless; the next, you’re standing face to face with an elephant or enjoying a glass of wine among the vineyards. And as if that weren’t enough, long stretches of beach and vibrant cities are waiting for you along the coast.

It’s a country made for travelling at your own pace: from safari to mountain landscapes, from nature reserves to the ocean.

Face to face with the Big Five

No trip to South Africa is complete without at least one safari. In the country’s wildlife reserves, adventure is never far away. Lions hiding in the tall grass, elephants quietly making their way through the bush and rhinos suddenly appearing beside the road.

In and around the Kruger area, you have plenty of time to settle into the rhythm of the bush. On a game drive, you may have to wait a while before spotting anything, but when the ranger suddenly slows down, you know there might be something nearby. Perhaps lions resting in the grass ahead, or a herd of elephants quietly crossing the road. You never know in advance.

Want to take the safari experience one step further? Stay at a private safari lodge, where you can often sleep overlooking a waterhole. You don’t even need to head out on a game drive. Give it some time and watch from your terrace as animals come down to drink, sometimes well into the night.

Further south, towards the Garden Route, lies Addo Elephant National Park. While Kruger is known for its immense size, Addo is more compact and home to a remarkably large elephant population, making it an excellent place to look for the Big Five without covering the long distances of a larger park.

Road-tripping through ever-changing landscapes

South Africa was made for road trips. The distances may be long, but that’s exactly why the scenery keeps changing. You can set off in the morning surrounded by mountains and end the day beside the ocean. In between? Panoramic views, small towns, wildlife parks and roads that make you want to pull over just because you can.

A route through Mpumalanga, for example, takes you along the famous Panorama Route. Blyde River Canyon and the green hills around Graskop are another reminder of just how diverse this country is. Further south, the Drakensberg mountains await, with rugged peaks and hiking trails setting the scene.

Take a longer route through the interior and there’s a good chance you’ll pass through the Karoo. By day, it’s all about silence and wide-open landscapes. But after dark, something special happens: with very little light pollution, the region has some of the clearest night skies in the country. Stop for a moment, look up and the Milky Way stretches out above you.

Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

While Kruger and the Drakensberg are all about nature, Cape Town combines spectacular views with a more refined side of South Africa, although adventure is never far away here either.

Table Mountain is the place to start. The cable car takes you to the plateau in just a few minutes, with Cape Town, Robben Island and the ocean spread out below you. Prefer flying to climbing? Take a helicopter flight over Cape Town. In half an hour, you’ll see Table Mountain, the Atlantic coastline and the Cape of Good Hope from a completely different perspective.

Further along the coast, in Simon’s Town, you’ll find Boulders Beach. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can walk close to wild African penguins, with the birds sometimes wandering just metres away across the white sand.

Inland lie Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, at the heart of the Cape Winelands. In Franschhoek, hop aboard the Wine Tram, a hop-on, hop-off tram that takes you from one wine estate to the next. Taste a few wines, stop for lunch and simply hop back on when you’re ready to continue.

Further east along the coast lies Hermanus, one of the world’s best places for whale watching. A boat trip gets you even closer, and there’s often a chance of spotting dolphins too. Nearby, in Gansbaai, you can go cage diving with great white sharks if you’d rather come face to face with what’s hiding beneath the surface.

And for those who love the waves: near the Cape of Good Hope, outside Cape Town, the waters of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The waves and temperature differences between the two oceans make this a particularly fascinating part of the country for surfing.

From the bush to the ocean

Further along the coast, in KwaZulu-Natal, nature reserves, wetlands and beaches alternate along the way. In St Lucia, you can head out onto the water and explore the wetlands, while Kosi Bay offers a much quieter and more untouched side of South Africa. With a little luck, you may spot hippos, crocodiles or an impressive variety of birdlife.

Continue along the coast and the pace changes once again. In Ballito, it’s time to slow down, with your feet in the sand and the ocean in front of you. No packed schedule. No alarm clock for an early-morning safari.

If you prefer your adventure with an extra shot of adrenaline, head to the Bloukrans Bridge on the Garden Route, where you can bungee jump from one of the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee sites. A few seconds of free fall above a gorge more than two hundred metres deep.

The perfect balance between relaxation and adventure

You can experience a lot in South Africa without your trip ever feeling rushed. Start the day with a walk through nature and end it over a long lunch. Take on a challenging hike in the Drakensberg and spend the following day relaxing by the pool. Or, after a few days on the road, enjoy a local wine as the sun sinks behind the hills.

There’s plenty to discover when it comes to food too. From a traditional braai, the South African barbecue where meat is grilled over a wood or charcoal fire, to fresh produce and South African wines, food is very much part of the experience here. Add eleven official languages and a rich variety of cultures, and you’ll discover a destination with far more layers than you might expect at first glance.

South Africa isn’t a country you simply tick off in a few days. Maybe you came for the safari, but it’s an unexpected sunset that stays with you. Or perhaps you came for the landscapes and stumbled upon a coastal town where you wished you could have stayed a little longer.

Travel smoothly to South Africa with Turkish Airlines

The journey itself does not have to be a complicated puzzle either. Turkish Airlines flies directly from Istanbul to three key destinations in South Africa, with 10 weekly flights to Cape Town, 7 to Johannesburg and 4 to Durban. This gives you several convenient options for building your itinerary around the places you want to explore.

Start in Johannesburg, for example, for a journey towards the wildlife reserves and the east of the country, or fly into Cape Town and continue through the Winelands and along the Garden Route. If you mainly want to combine safari and the coast, Durban is a great starting point.

The story that stays with you

You’ll come home with stories you never saw coming. That elephant that walked so close you held your breath. Or a conversation at a bar with a local in Ballito, about nothing in particular, that somehow comes back to you weeks later.

South Africa is a land of endless contrasts. And often, it’s the one moment you never expected that stays with you the longest.
