Why Vietnam Surprised Our Family All Over Again

A few years after first discovering Vietnam during one of their many Travel for Life trips, this family returned to Vietnam again this summer. This time, another varied route was on the itinerary: from the green rice terraces in the north, the limestone formations of Ninh Binh, to the atmospheric streets of Hoi An and the buzzing city life of Ho Chi Minh City.

"Vietnam surprised us again with its enormous variety."

Along the way, active days in nature alternated with culture, local food, historical sites and spontaneous encounters. They rediscovered well-known places, but also stumbled upon spots that unexpectedly became highlights of the trip.

Adventure in the north

The journey began in Hanoi, after which the family travelled on to Sapa in northern Vietnam. The bustling streets of the capital gave way to green mountain slopes, authentic villages and sweeping rice terraces stretching across the mountainsides.

The weather was changeable, but that's exactly what gave the surroundings a special atmosphere. Mist hung between the valleys, making the landscape almost mysterious. During a challenging trek towards Fansipan, at 3.143 metres the highest mountain in Vietnam and Indochina, they got to know the rugged, mountainous north.

After a few days among the mountains, the scenery changed completely. The journey continued south, this time by night train.

"After that we travelled further south by night train, an adventure in itself for the whole family."

Ninh Binh: an unexpected favourite

Some destinations have been on the plan for a long time, while others only earn their place during the trip itself. For this family, Ninh Binh was clearly one of those surprises.

"Ninh Binh was one of our absolute highlights."

The region is known for its towering limestone formations, green rice paddies and peaceful villages. By bike, they rode along country lanes past the fields, discovering the Vietnamese countryside at a relaxed pace.

A boat trip then took them between the impressive rock formations. The landscape kept changing, creating one of those moments where you instinctively reach for your camera even though, afterwards, no photo quite captures how impressive the surroundings really were.

The charm of Hoi An

From Ninh Binh, the journey continued to Hoi An. The historic town is instantly recognisable by its old facades, atmospheric little streets and colourful lanterns.

"In Hoi An we found the perfect combination of culture, gastronomy and relaxation."

During the day they discovered local specialities, lively markets and various spots in and around the old town. After the more active days in the north, Hoi An also offered room to slow the pace down a little.

As soon as evening fell, the town transformed again. Thousands of lanterns lit up the streets, giving Hoi An a completely different atmosphere. A walk through the historic centre naturally became part of the experience.

The energetic rhythm of Ho Chi Minh City

The last stop was Ho Chi Minh City, where the pace picked up sharply again. After the mountains and the quiet countryside, they found themselves in a city full of scooters, markets, street food and modern neighbourhoods.

"As a finale, we discovered Ho Chi Minh City in a whole new way: a street food tour by scooter, the Cu Chi tunnels, local markets and the buzzing city life."

A street food tour by scooter took them from one eatery to the next, letting them experience the city in a completely different way. They also visited the Cu Chi tunnels, an impressive piece of Vietnamese history.

Amid the busy traffic, the smells of street food and the colourful markets, Ho Chi Minh City once again showed a completely different side of Vietnam.

The best memories lie in the small moments

Although the landscapes, cities and activities shaped much of the trip, it wasn't always the big sights that left the deepest impression.

"What will probably stay with us most are the many spontaneous encounters with the Vietnamese people."

A friendly smile along the way, an impromptu chat at a market, a brief encounter in a restaurant, these were the small moments that added extra colour to the trip. The hospitality of the Vietnamese people made the country not just beautiful to explore, but also a pleasure to travel through.

Vietnam, again but never the same

Travelling to the same destination a second time doesn't mean making the same trip. By discovering different places and activities all over again, Vietnam once more revealed a different side of itself this time.

"Vietnam turned out to be a destination that perfectly combines adventure, culture, nature and gastronomy."

From the green rice terraces in Sapa and the striking landscapes of Ninh Binh, to the historic charm of Hoi An and the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City: the route brought a remarkable variety of experiences.

"For families looking for an authentic travel experience, we can absolutely recommend this country."

With a backpack full of stories and memories, the family returned home. A second trip to Vietnam, a few years after their first encounter with the country, but once again with plenty of new places to discover.

"Thank you to Connections for the great organisation and support on this beautiful trip.”
