Crete: between goats, turquoise sea and unexpected favorites

Kalimera, today I’d like to talk about my adopted country: Greece. But there is so much to say about this destination that I’ll limit myself to my latest crush: heading to… Crete.

When people think of Crete, they often imagine beaches, postcard views and villages bleached by the sun. But once I arrived, I discovered so much more. I discovered a lively, proud and contrasting island where, within just a few kilometers, you move from a historic monastery to a secret cove, from a quiet village to a beach that almost looks unreal.

For me, authentic Crete is exactly that: an island that doesn’t try to seduce you, yet somehow conquers you effortlessly.

I’m not entirely sure when Crete won me over. Maybe at the first bend in the mountains, when a goat looked straight into my eyes as if I clearly didn’t belong there. Or maybe later, with a glass of raki in my hand, wondering why I hadn’t come sooner.

What I do know is this: Crete isn’t just visited. It’s experienced. Slowly. Very slowly. (Yes, even when Google Maps says “10 minutes”… expect the unexpected.)

Chania: the sweetness of life by the harbor

From the moment I arrived in Chania, I was hooked. The colorful streets, the overflowing bougainvillea, the cats that seem to have signed a lifetime lease… and that Venetian harbor at sunset.

I told myself: “just a short stroll”… and three hours later I was still in the same place, hesitating between dessert or a second dessert.

(I chose both. One must know how to make important decisions.)

Rethymnon: timeless charm

Rethymnon has a quiet charm that slowly settles in. Its alleys, its fortress, its weathered façades… everything invites you to slow down.

I let myself wander without a plan, intentionally getting lost and discovering small squares where time seems to have decided to slow down.

Moni Arkadiou: beauty… and memory

On the road, I stopped at Moni Arkadiou. Behind its peaceful façade lies a powerful, almost moving story. The place is beautiful, but it naturally invites silence. You stay less time than expected… but you think about it long afterwards.

Matala: hippie vibes and legendary cliffs

In Matala, I felt a hint of freedom. Maybe because in the 70s hippies lived in caves carved into the cliffs.

Today people come for the beach, but mostly for the atmosphere. And for that sunset that transforms the landscape into something straight out of a movie.

Elafonissi: the end of the road… and the reward

To reach Elafonissi, you have to earn it. The road is long, winding and sometimes a bit adventurous… and you almost wonder if it’s really worth it. Spoiler: yes. A thousand times yes.

When I saw that unreal water and the pink-tinted sand, I experienced one of those rare moments when words become useless. Everything is there. Simply put: the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. And suddenly the kilometers traveled don’t matter anymore.

Spinalonga: the island that touches your heart

Spinalonga is not a casual visit. This former leper colony has a unique atmosphere. Between the ruins and the silence, you feel something powerful. It’s a place that leaves a mark without saying too much.

Preveli, Argilos and Chelidoni: my unexpected gems

Then there are those lesser-known places you can’t forget. Preveli, first. To reach it, you need to earn it: a steep descent and climb along the cliff under the sun. A decent level of fitness and plenty of water are essential.

But once you reach the bottom, magic happens. The fresh river, the palm trees, the oasis feeling… everything makes you forget the effort. Even the climb back up. Well… almost.

Argilos Beach, where I found myself covering my body in clay while laughing uncontrollably. Apparently it’s a very serious tradition.

And then Chelidoni Beach. Wild, discreet, almost secret… with one detail that makes all the difference: a beach bar mostly visited by locals. Few tourists, a simple and authentic atmosphere. You sit down, order a drink, and suddenly feel like you’ve discovered a place not everyone knows yet.

The real Crete: the villages

Between two beaches, I took the time to stop in small villages. The kind where people look at you with curious but kind eyes, where a glass of water is served without asking, and where time seems almost negotiable. That’s when I realized something: Crete isn’t a list of places. It’s a way of life.

Conclusion

I left with sand in my shoes, memories filling my mind… and a strong suspicion that I’ll be back. Because Crete isn’t just a destination. It’s a place that slows you down, makes you smile… and makes you want to order “just one last drink”. Spoiler: it’s never the last one. As they say there: “San Ellada den exei” (There is nothing like Greece.)
