Road trip to Lake Como: tips, route and the most beautiful stops around Lago di Como

Sometimes you take a trip that already feels right before you even arrive. That’s exactly how this journey began for us. In June 2024, my boyfriend and I got into the car and set off toward northern Italy. No rush, no strict itinerary. Just driving, crossing the Alps and following the sun.

Our mission? Sun on our faces, pasta on our plates, and that unmistakable Italian rhythm of life where everything feels just a little slower and more delicious. And believe me: Lake Como did not disappoint for a single second.

Domaso: waking up to pure Italian tranquillity

On the northern side of the lake lies Domaso, a small village where life still feels wonderfully authentic. This is where we decided to base ourselves: a charming little hotel near the water, with the kind of view that makes you forget about your phone.

Every morning we woke up surrounded by mountains, vineyards gently sloping down toward the lake, and the quiet sounds of a village slowly coming to life. No hurry. No noise.

Mid-June is actually a dream time to be here. The temperatures are pleasant, the days are long, and the big summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. It almost feels like you have Lake Como to yourself.

Domaso also turned out to be the perfect starting point for exploring the lake. From here, scenic roads lead in every direction, passing through charming villages where you instantly feel like stopping.

One of our first mornings brought us to Dongo, where a local market was taking place. Stalls filled with cheeses, olives, fresh fruit and regional delicacies lined the streets. The smell of fresh bread drifted through the air, while the familiar Italian buzz of conversation filled the square.

And for coffee lovers, this region is paradise. In a small café you can still pay just one euro for an espresso. We often ordered an espresso macchiato, sat down on a terrace overlooking the lake and watched the day slowly unfold.

A trattoria where time seems to stand still

One evening we discovered a tiny family restaurant hidden in a narrow alley in the village. No flashy signs, no tourist menus. Just a simple trattoria familiare.

Inside, the grandfather was cooking in the kitchen while the grandmother came to take our order. She only spoke Italian, and we barely spoke any but with some hand gestures and plenty of laughter, we managed perfectly.

Soon steaming plates of pasta fresca arrived at our table. With great enthusiasm, the grandmother grated extra Parmigiano Reggiano over our pasta, as if she personally wanted to make sure we understood we had chosen the right place.

Menaggio: the relaxed heart of the lake

One of our favourite stops around Lake Como was Menaggio. While some towns around the lake can feel quite busy, Menaggio still has a relaxed and local atmosphere. The charming Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of the village, where locals sip their espresso while life quietly passes by.

We took a walk along the lungolago, the lakeside promenade lined with palm trees, small boats gently bobbing on the water and terraces that invite you to stay just a little longer. Here we also tried something typically Italian: a maritozzo. A soft brioche bun sliced open and filled generously with thick cream. It sounds simple but it’s dangerously delicious.

Como: grandeur and the first pizza of the trip

The city of Como is the largest town around the lake and an impressive gateway to the region. The absolute highlight is the Duomo di Como, a cathedral that quite literally makes you stop in your tracks. Marble, sculptures and intricate details, everywhere you look there is something new to discover. After wandering through the city, it was time for our first pizza of the trip. I chose a simple pizza marinara: tomato, garlic and oregano. When the ingredients are fresh and the crust comes straight from a wood-fired oven… you really don’t need anything else.

Bellagio: The pearl of Lake Como

Bellagio is not called “la perla del Lago di Como” for nothing. The village sits at the unique point where the lake’s three branches meet. Narrow stairways, colourful houses and flowers on almost every balcony make it one of the most photogenic places around the lake.

We wandered through the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi, where exotic plants, sculptures and winding paths stretch along the water. One particularly special moment was enjoying a drink at the iconic Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. From the terrace you overlook the pool and the lake, while elegant boats slowly dock nearby. It almost feels like watching a scene from a film. For lunch we also discovered a little gem: Dai Viga Pasta Fresca. You choose your pasta and sauce, and moments later you’re holding a plate of freshly made pasta.

Varenna: perhaps the most romantic village

Not far from Bellagio lies Varenna and honestly, this may have been the village that touched us the most. The colourful houses seem to cling to the mountainside, narrow alleys lead down to the water and small hidden squares appear around every corner. It feels almost like stepping into a fairytale. We visited Villa Monastero, famous for its long botanical gardens along the lake. Walking between palm trees, flowers and sculptures while the blue water sparkles in the sun is one of those moments you instantly store in your memory.

Two days in Milan: from historic grandeur to modern flair

After several days around the lake, we decided to spend two days in Milan. We parked our car in Colico and took the train into the city.

The symbol of Milan is of course the Duomo di Milano, a massive Gothic cathedral covered in spires and statues that almost feels surreal. Next to the cathedral lies the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of Europe’s most beautiful shopping galleries. Here we discovered Marchesi 1824, a stunning historic pasticceria. We ordered an espresso and a small pastry and simply sat there watching people pass by.

In the evening we headed to Navigli, the canal district where bars and restaurants line the water. Here aperitivo is almost a ritual: you order a drink and receive small bites to enjoy alongside it.

The next day we visited The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci in Santa Maria delle Grazie. Afterwards we wandered through Brera, an artistic neighbourhood filled with galleries, boutiques and cafés. For a modern contrast we also visited Porta Nuova, home to the striking Bosco Verticale, two residential towers covered with trees and plants. Milan is a city where old and new blend together effortlessly.

Verona: romance between roman stones

Our final stop was Verona, a city that had long been on my list thanks to the story of Romeo and Juliet. The heart of the city is the impressive Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheatre that is still used today for operas and concerts. From there we wandered through the charming streets of the historic centre toward Casa di Giulietta, home to the famous balcony and Juliet’s statue.

But Verona is much more than that story. It’s the intimate squares, the warm colours of the façades and the cosy wine bars that make the city so special. At sunset we walked across the Castelvecchio bridge over the Adige River. The light, the view… magical.

A Dinner we will never forget

For our final evening we wanted something truly special. We found it at the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Tremezzina.

The hotel sits directly on the water with spectacular views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

We started with an aperitivo of local charcuterie and cheeses while the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains. Then came a cacio e pepe prepared tableside in a large wheel of Parmigiano. The aroma of cheese and pepper alone was irresistible. And finally: tiramisù, freshly made at the table. Without a doubt the best tiramisù I have ever eaten.

Lake Como: a place where you naturally slow down

What makes Lake Como so special is the perfect combination of everything: elegant villages, dramatic mountain landscapes, incredible food and that unmistakable Italian rhythm of life. An espresso on a village square, boats gently gliding across the water, a plate of fresh pasta on a sunny terrace, it’s those small moments that make a journey here unforgettable.

And the lake lies in a region full of possibilities. Lago Maggiore and Lake Garda are nearby, making this area perfect for travellers who love to keep exploring. Whether you visit with your partner, friends or family, Lake Como has something timeless about it. And honestly? I still often think back to those evenings by the water, the gentle sound of boats in the harbour… and of course that unforgettable tiramisù.
