My 5 day discovery of Rio de Janeiro
Some destinations are easy to sell, while others need to be experienced to truly understand their value.
Rio de Janeiro clearly belongs to that second category. I spent five days exploring this iconic city and I can honestly say it completely won me over.
Day 1: A flying start, both literally and figuratively
Right after landing, I wasted no time and jumped straight into a jeep heading towards Corcovado, Santa Teresa and the lush rainforest. What a first impression. Within moments, we were already enjoying breathtaking views over the city, its favelas and the coastline.
As if that was not enough, a perfectly shaped rainbow appeared in the sky, a magical welcome. Standing beneath Christ the Redeemer was a special moment. You have seen it in pictures, but being there in person is something else entirely. Despite the crowds, it remains incredibly impressive, especially when you notice the fine mosaic details up close.
From there, we continued to the colorful Selarón steps, a must for photos, and then to the lively Lapa district where you instantly feel the city’s creative and trendy energy.
I ended the day the Brazilian way, with a generous dinner at Assador Rio’s. Meat lovers, take note. Unlimited perfectly grilled meat, and yes, I fully indulged.
Day 2: Earning the view and discovering real life
Today was all about nature. About an hour outside the city, I headed to Barra de Guaratiba for a hike. The trail itself is manageable, but the humidity makes it more challenging than expected.
Our guide made the experience even more engaging by sharing insights about the local plants and wildlife. Then came the highlight, the viewpoint at Pedra do Telégrafo. That moment when you catch your breath and realize exactly why you came. The ocean, the coastline, the silence, simply stunning.
In the afternoon, I had one of the most memorable experiences of the trip, visiting a favela with our guide Augusto. This is definitely not something to do alone. Thanks to him, we were able to safely gain insight into daily life. The contrast with the rest of the city is striking, yet the atmosphere felt warm and genuine. Moments like these stay with you.
In the evening, the energy picked up again at Rio Scenarium. Live music, dancing locals, this is where you truly feel how deeply rhythm is rooted in Brazilian culture.
Day 3: A dream come true above Rio
The day started light and fun with customizing my own pair of Havaianas, a small but very typical Rio souvenir.
Next up was Sugarloaf Mountain, but the absolute highlight was without a doubt the helicopter flight. Seeing Rio from above is hard to put into words. Christ the Redeemer, Ipanema Beach, the mountains and the ocean all come together in one breathtaking view.
And just when you think it cannot get better, there was a party happening at the top. That perfectly sums up Rio, unexpected, vibrant and always ready to celebrate.
Dag 4: Carnaval vibes en ontspannen afsluiten
Vandaag kreeg ik een blik achter de schermen van Carnaval. We reden langs de ateliers waar praalwagens worden gebouwd. Indrukwekkend om te zien hoeveel werk en detail daarin kruipt.
Rio is trouwens ook een openluchtmuseum als het op street art aankomt. Overal in de stad ontdek je kleurrijke kunstwerken.
De dag eindigde op een hoogtepunt met een boottocht bij zonsondergang. Met een caipirinha in de hand en zicht op de skyline van Rio terwijl de zon langzaam in de oceaan zakt. Dit zijn momenten waarop je even alles vergeet.
’s Avonds nog even langs de markt van Copacabana geslenterd. Ideaal om souvenirs te scoren, van slippers tot kunstwerkjes en alles daartussen.
Day 5: One last moment to enjoy
On my final day, I headed to Ipanema Beach. Probably the most famous beach in Rio and definitely my favorite. The atmosphere, the mountain backdrop and the local lifestyle truly capture the soul of the city.
One last time feeling the sun, one last taste of that unmistakable Rio vibe, the perfect ending.
My conclusion as a Travel Designer and traveler
Rio de Janeiro is a destination you feel rather than explain. It combines nature, culture, beaches, gastronomy and an energy that is hard to describe but instantly understood once you are there.
For me, it is the perfect destination for anyone looking to escape while enjoying a rich variety of experiences.
And honestly, I already know one thing. This was only the beginning. Brazil leaves you wanting more, more Brazil, more adventure, more samba.
