Travel Documents
All Belgian nationals travelling on a Belgian passport (children and babies included) must be in possession of an international e-passport (electronic) containing min. 2 blank pages, valid for at least 1 day after their return home. All travellers to Canada must purchase an eTA or electronic Travel Authorisation online via the official website cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp prior to entering Canadian territory via its airports. Price: 7 CAD or +/- 5 Euros. Your eTA is valid for 5 years and linked to your passport number. This implies that as soon as your passport expires, so does your eTA.
To save time at Customs and Immigration in Canada, you can download the CanBorder eDeclaration app before your arrival. You will then receive a QR-code that remains valid for 24 hours. Thanks to the scanning of the QR code, you do not have to re-enter your data on the screen at the Customs counters. You can download via the Apple Store app or Google Play app.
Please note: A credit card is required upon check-in at the hotels and also when renting a car. All cross-border travellers with the USA must on top be in possession of an international passport and an ESTA. The digital passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the set date of your return flight. The electronic travel authorization must be purchased online by means of a personal credit card via the official link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ (14 USD on 20JAN2015). Your ESTA is valid for max. 2 years. Should your international passport expire within that period, so does your ESTA as it is linked to your passport number. We strongly recommend you to print out the Esta- or Eta permit and to have it on you while you travel to avoid problems.
Travellers with a non-Belgian nationality and / or travellers travelling on a foreign passport are invited to spontaneously report this matter to the Connections travel consultant and shall contact their respective embassy (s) or Consulate (ate) to obtain the latest updates concerning all current travel requirements and documents.

The Natural Wonders of Atlantic Canada
Atlantic Canada is home to some of North America’s most impressive natural wonders. In Gros Morne National Park on Newfoundland, you can hike through a unique geological landscape so special that UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site. The Bay of Fundy, located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, surprises with the world’s highest tidal difference, where you can walk on the ocean floor twice a day. On Cape Breton Island, the Cabot Trail takes you past breathtaking cliffs where eagles soar high above. It’s the perfect destination for nature lovers looking to escape busy tourist routes.
Whale Watching in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland
The waters around Nova Scotia and Newfoundland rank among the best places in the world to watch whales. From May to September, you can spot humpback whales, minke whales, and even the majestic blue whale. In St. John’s, daily boat tours head out to rich feeding grounds where these marine giants gather. The Bay of Fundy also offers excellent whale-watching opportunities, often accompanied by playful dolphins. For the ultimate experience, head to Twillingate, known as the “Iceberg and Whale Capital” of Newfoundland, where you can photograph these giants of the sea against a backdrop of drifting icebergs.
The Best Time to Visit Atlantic Canada
The best time to visit Atlantic Canada is from June to September. During these months, you can enjoy pleasant temperatures between 15°C and 25°C, and most tourist attractions are open. July and August bring the warmest days, ideal for beach visits on Prince Edward Island or hiking in national parks. Whale watchers should plan their trip between May and September, while iceberg enthusiasts will find May and June the best months to visit Newfoundland. In September and October, the Indian Summer transforms the landscapes into a spectacular display of colors as maples and birches shed their leaves.
Cultural Highlights in Atlantic Canada
Atlantic Canada offers a rich cultural experience influenced by Indigenous peoples, French settlers, and Scottish immigrants. Visit historic Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage town, known for its colorful fishermen’s houses and artisan shops. In St. John’s, Newfoundland, you’ll discover a lively music scene in the pubs along George Street. The Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island takes you back to the 18th century with historical reconstructions of French colonial life. On Prince Edward Island, you can visit Green Gables Heritage Place, the inspiration behind the world-famous novel Anne of Green Gables, which helped shape Canadian identity.
Practical Tips for Your Atlantic Canada Self-Drive Tour
When planning your Atlantic Canada self-drive tour, make sure to allow enough time for ferries, especially between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Book these services well in advance, particularly during high season. Keep in mind the distances between destinations; while the roads are excellent, towns are often farther apart than you might expect. Download offline maps, as mobile coverage in remote areas can be limited. Plan at least two nights at each main destination to have enough time for exploration. And don’t forget to make regular stops at the many viewpoints along the coastal routes for breathtaking scenery.
