Best Time to Travel to Sardinia

For the best Sardinia experience, the ideal travel period is between May and October. In the early season (May–June), you can enjoy pleasant temperatures around 25°C—perfect for an active holiday with hiking and sightseeing. The blooming nature creates spectacular landscapes along the coastal roads.

During the summer months of July and August, temperatures rise above 30°C, ideal for beach lovers who want to swim in crystal-clear waters. The late season (September–October) offers the best of both worlds: warm sea temperatures without the summer crowds. You can then drive peacefully along the winding roads of the Costa Smeralda and explore authentic villages without the tourist masses.

Top Sights During Your Sardinia Road Trip

Sardinia is full of historical and natural treasures to discover during your journey. A must-see is the archaeological site of Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring impressive prehistoric towers and Bronze Age settlements.

In the south, Cagliari awaits with its historic Castello district, offering panoramic views over the Gulf of Cagliari. On the west coast, Bosa enchants visitors with its pastel-colored houses along the Temo River and the hilltop Malaspina Castle. Nature lovers will want to stop at Pan di Zucchero, a majestic rock formation rising from the azure sea along the rugged southwest coast.

Exploring Sardinia by Rental Car

A rental car is essential for your Sardinian adventure, as the island is filled with hidden spots that can only be reached by car. Sardinia’s roads are generally well maintained, though some coastal routes can be narrow and winding. These roads reward you with breathtaking panoramas and unexpected stops at secluded coves.

The inland roads lead through unspoiled landscapes, olive groves and vineyards where you can visit local producers. Parking in historic town centers can be challenging, but most hotels offer parking solutions. For the stunning Gulf of Orosei or the La Maddalena archipelago, combine your road trip with boat excursions for the ultimate Sardinia experience.

Discovering Sardinian Cuisine

Sardinian cuisine will delight your taste buds throughout your trip. The island is known for Pane Carasau, a crispy flatbread once taken on long journeys by shepherds. Don’t miss malloreddus, small gnocchi-like pasta often served with rich tomato sauce and pecorino cheese. Along the coast, enjoy fresh seafood, including bottarga (cured fish roe), known as the “caviar of Sardinia.”

In the inland regions, lamb dishes dominate, slow-cooked with local herbs. Finish your meal with sebadas, fried pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with honey. Be sure to try local wines such as the ruby-red Cannonau and the refreshing white Vermentino. A stop at an agriturismo is the best way to experience Sardinia’s authentic flavors.

Exploring Sardinia’s Beaches and Bays

Sardinia is often called the Caribbean of Europe—and for good reason. During your road trip, you’ll find beaches that rival the most beautiful in the world. On the famous Costa Smeralda lies Spiaggia del Principe, a photogenic half-moon bay with turquoise water and fine white sand.

Nature lovers should not miss Cala Goloritzè in the Gulf of Orosei—accessible only via a hike or by boat—making the limestone-cliff bay even more exclusive. In the north, La Pelosa welcomes you with shallow, crystal-clear water and views of the small island of Asinara. On the west coast, Spiaggia Is Arutas stands out with its unique beach of small quartz grains that resemble rice.

Between these gems, you’ll continue to uncover new hidden coves throughout your journey—often accessible only by car.
