Madeira, the garden of the Atlantic Ocean

Madeira is a lush green island belonging to Portugal, often referred to as the Garden of the Atlantic. It’s where wild nature meets Portuguese charm. During this 8-day self-drive journey, you’ll explore the island with complete freedom—dramatic cliffs, coastal roads, lively markets, and peaceful valleys. With your own rental car, you set the pace and enjoy scenic walks, local flavours, and breathtaking views.

Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is a must-see, but don’t miss São Vicente nestled in a lush northern valley, Calheta with its golden beaches, or São Lourenço, the striking peninsula in the east. And of course, Pico Ruivo—the highest point on the island.

This tailor-made trip is perfect for independent travellers looking for a blend of nature, culture, and a touch of adventure.

Madeira is best discovered with all your senses—every twist in the road brings something new.

Discover the Most Beautiful Spots of Madeira

Madeira offers a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be explored during your tour. The rugged north coast contrasts beautifully with the sunny south, where villages like Ponta do Sol welcome you with authentic Portuguese hospitality. Be sure to take a walk through the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the last remnants of the prehistoric forest that once covered large parts of Europe. Levada walks along centuries-old irrigation channels provide a unique way to explore the island’s interior at your own pace.

Explore Funchal During Your Tour

As the beating heart of Madeira, the capital Funchal deserves a prominent place in your itinerary. Begin your exploration in the old town with its black-and-white streets, where local artists have transformed colorful doors into true works of art. Visit the covered market Mercado dos Lavradores, where you’ll find tropical fruits, fresh fish, and local specialties. Then take the cable car to Monte for panoramic views of Funchal Bay. Don’t forget to visit the famous Botanical Gardens, where the diversity of plants and flowers gives you a taste of why Madeira is called the Flower Island.

Hiking Along Madeira’s Levadas

Madeira’s levadas are a network of more than 2,000 kilometers of irrigation channels that transport water from the rainy north to the drier south. These ancient water channels are accompanied by walking paths that lead you through the island’s most breathtaking landscapes. The walk along Levada do Caldeirão Verde takes you through tunnels and past waterfalls to an enchanting natural amphitheater. For beginners, Levada dos Maroços is ideal, while experienced hikers can challenge themselves with the spectacular route to Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest point. Always bring a flashlight for tunnels and check the weather before setting out.

Taste the Gastronomy of Madeira

A tour through Madeira is not complete without discovering the local flavors. Be sure to try espetada, large beef skewers grilled over laurel wood, often served with milho frito (fried corn cubes) and bolo do caco, a traditional garlic bread. Fish lovers will enjoy the fresh espada (black scabbardfish), prepared in various ways. Finish your meal with a glass of Madeira wine, a fortified wine with a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Don’t forget to try poncha, a local liqueur made from sugarcane spirit, honey, and lemon—perfect while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean from a terrace in a coastal village.

Best Time to Visit Madeira

Madeira is known as the island of eternal spring, with pleasant temperatures year-round. The best period for a tour is from April to October, when the chance of rain is lower and you can fully enjoy outdoor activities. In June, jacaranda trees bloom in Funchal, giving the streets a purple glow. Nature lovers should plan their visit in spring when flowers are in full bloom. During July and August, it’s warmer and busier but perfect for beach lovers wanting to relax in Calheta or Machico. In December and January, the flower festival is a colorful spectacle that brightens the dark winter months.
