My First Encounter with Mountain Gorillas
The gorilla has always been my favorite animal. I’ve always been touched by their presence, their gaze, and that incredible feeling of closeness to us humans. Gorillas in the Mist is also one of my favorite movies. The story of Dian Fossey left a deep impression on me and, without even realizing it, the idea of one day observing gorillas in their natural habitat slowly became a dream of mine.
Everything began in Kampala. As I discovered Uganda, a country still largely untouched by mass tourism, I was experiencing my very first trip to East Africa, my first safari, and above all, the fulfillment of a childhood dream: trekking to meet mountain gorillas.
From my very first moments in Kampala, I was struck by the country’s energy. A vibrant, sometimes chaotic city, filled with boda-bodas weaving through traffic and colorful local markets. But very quickly, I left that lively atmosphere behind and headed west, toward the moment I had imagined for so long.

The Effort Was Worth It
The trek was challenging. Everything was new to me: the humid jungle, the slippery slopes, the dense vegetation. Every step required effort, but the excitement always took over. Thankfully, we were accompanied by local guides whose support proved invaluable throughout the entire journey.
When the moment to meet them approaches, the atmosphere changes instantly. The group slows down. Voices become quieter. The sounds of the forest seem to close in around us. The guides signal for us to move even more carefully. We advance slowly, in a calm kind of tension, as if the forest itself were holding its breath.
And then, they were there.
A family of gorillas, only a few meters away. Still. Present. Real. For a few seconds, everything feels suspended. You no longer know who is observing whom.
Face to Face with the Gorillas
For about an hour, we remain beside them in their natural habitat. From an incredibly close distance, we observe them moving through the forest, but they observe us too. That silent encounter creates something difficult to describe: no aggression, only a sense of shared curiosity.
Meeting mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was both an extraordinary and deeply emotional experience. I discovered a remarkably peaceful group: silverback males, females with their babies, and a calm social structure perfectly integrated into the forest.
The presence of local rangers makes the experience both safe and respectful, while minimizing our impact on their habitat. You quickly realize that this experience also directly contributes to their protection, as every permit helps support conservation efforts and preserve this unique sanctuary.

Safaris, Landscapes and Human Encounters
The rest of the trip was just as unforgettable. My first safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park felt like a true discovery. Seeing elephants, hippos and lions in their natural environment for the very first time felt almost surreal. Every encounter with African wildlife looked like a documentary scene… except this time, it was real.
Throughout the journey, the landscapes revealed themselves in all their raw beauty: vast, wild and almost untouched. But above all, it was the human encounters that gave this adventure its deepest meaning.
During the drives, we passed through many villages. Everywhere, children greeted us enthusiastically, sometimes running alongside the vehicle with huge smiles on their faces. The atmosphere was warm, simple and deeply human. Those spontaneous little interactions added an incredibly touching dimension to the trip and left a lasting impression.
Everywhere we went, we encountered genuine smiles, natural kindness and disarming simplicity.
When I left the country, I wasn’t just bringing home memories. I felt like I had experienced something unique, almost life-changing. Because some childhood dreams never truly disappear. They simply wait for the right moment to become real.
My Practical Tips for a Comfortable Gorilla Trek
Trekking through the Bwindi forest was an unforgettable experience for me, but it definitely requires some preparation, especially when it comes to equipment.
Good waterproof hiking boots are absolutely essential. The terrain is often muddy, slippery and extremely humid, while the vegetation is dense throughout the trek. Comfortable, lightweight but covering clothing is highly recommended, since you are constantly moving through the forest environment.
Some small details truly make a difference in the field. Gardening gloves turned out to be extremely useful for grabbing branches and protecting my hands during more technical sections. High socks are also very practical to avoid bites from ants, mosquitoes and other insects found in the forest. They may seem like small things, but they really matter.
A lightweight rain jacket is also almost indispensable, as the weather changes quickly at higher altitudes.
The trek can last several hours before reaching the gorillas, which requires patience and endurance. Once there, everything is strictly supervised: following the rangers’ instructions carefully is essential, both for the safety of the animals and the visitors.

My Practical Tips for a Successful Safari in Uganda
I quickly understood that the key was adapting to the rhythm of the country and the rhythm of nature itself. Safaris usually start very early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when animals are most active. At first, it takes some adjustment, but you quickly embrace that unique pace, even though the days can be long, especially because of the distances between lodges.
I also realized how important it is to wear simple, comfortable clothing in neutral tones such as khaki, beige or green, helping you blend naturally into the environment. Mornings can be chilly, so a light jacket or windbreaker is definitely useful, especially in an open safari vehicle.
The roads inside the parks can be extremely dusty, or muddy depending on the season. Looking back, I would absolutely recommend bringing a scarf or buff to protect yourself from the dust, along with sunglasses.
Binoculars were a real game changer for me: they allow you to observe wildlife from afar and make the experience even more immersive. And although you naturally take many photos, I also loved experiencing certain moments without a camera, simply enjoying the present.
Finally, patience is essential. Distances are long, unexpected situations are common, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed or scheduled. That unpredictability is exactly what makes every encounter so unique and memorable. You simply need to stay attentive, quiet, and always follow your guide’s instructions.
