Albania, Europe’s last secret
The first time I traveled to Albania was in 2020, right in the middle of the coronavirus period, when traveling was anything but obvious. Yet that trip turned out to be one of the most authentic and surprising journeys I’ve ever taken in Europe. Since then, I’ve gone back every year… and each time it feels as if I’m discovering the country for the very first time.

In fact, the adventure started on the flight from Brussels to Tirana. The Albanian man sitting next to me was genuinely curious about what I was coming to do in “his” country. When I told him I wanted to discover Albania, a big smile appeared on his face. He offered me a drink and we started chatting. The tone of the trip was set immediately: warm, open, and incredibly welcoming.
My first stop was Shkodër, about two hours from Tirana airport. When I arrived at the hotel, we were immediately warned: a wedding was taking place by the pool that evening and the party might last until the early hours of the morning. Would that bother us? Quite the opposite… we were instantly invited to join. That night I barely saw my hotel room. The very first day was already unforgettable.

The next day we headed toward Theth, deep in the Albanian Alps. The drive alone is an experience. A narrow mountain road winds through rugged landscapes and breathtaking views. At the time, the road wasn’t yet paved, so we decided to go with a local guide. He told us about ancient traditions like blood feuds, took us to the beautiful Grunas Waterfall, and we ended the day with a generous meal at a local eco farm.
And the food… it deserves its own mention. Everything tastes incredibly fresh. Slow-cooked stews, vegetables straight from the garden, and bread that comes warm out of the oven. Stopping by a small bakery for a burek? Simple, but unbelievably delicious. In Albania, every meal feels like a small celebration.
One of the highlights of that first trip was a night by the Shala River. This remote canyon area can only be reached by ferry or small boat. During the day it’s idyllic, but once evening falls, a magical silence settles over the place. The emerald-blue water, the white stones sparkling in the sun, and the wild mountains surrounding you make it feel like a hidden paradise. The water is icy cold, but perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day. I explored the river by kayak, occasionally stopping at small “Hawaii-style” bars for a cocktail. What a place.

Of all the cities I visited in Albania, Berat may have been the most beautiful. The city breathes history and culture. In the evening it’s wonderful to walk along the promenade by the Osum River, with a view of the illuminated houses climbing up the hillside. I still remember a perfect evening on the rooftop terrace of Friendly House. A drink in hand, the old town beneath me, and a soft summer night… it almost felt unreal.
From Berat I continued to the Osum Canyon. In summer, the best way to explore this spectacular gorge is through river trekking. Wearing a wetsuit and ready for the cold water, I covered about five kilometres through the canyon—wading, swimming, floating, and hiking between the cliffs. From time to time the guides deliberately push you slightly out of your comfort zone, which only makes the adventure more exciting.
Later I also returned to go rafting there, and honestly, it’s something that shouldn’t be missed on a trip through Albania.

Another memory that stayed with me was cycling along Lake Ohrid. You ride through small villages and quiet roads toward places like Tushemisht, where some restaurants are literally built above the water. Sitting on a terrace overlooking the lake while enjoying fresh fish from Lake Ohrid… sometimes happiness is incredibly simple.

The Albanian coast is a different story. It’s not beautiful everywhere, to be honest. Sarandë and Ksamil felt a bit overrated to me: very busy and less charming during the summer. But there are also stunning places. Himarë has a relaxed atmosphere with lovely seafood restaurants, while Dhërmi feels trendier, with a slightly bohemian vibe.
What is spectacular, however, is the coastal road between Sarandë and Dhërmi. Steep mountains plunging almost directly into the sea, small turquoise bays, rocky beaches, and crystal-clear water. The perfect way to end a road trip along the Albanian coast.
And one last tip: don’t travel to Albania because it’s cheap. Travel there for the vibe. For the people. For the nature that still feels raw, pure, and wonderfully untouched.
