Asturias: a hidden gem in the green north of Spain
During my most recent trip to northern Spain, I discovered a region that instantly captured my heart: Asturias. Still relatively undiscovered by mass tourism, this region offers everything travelers dream of, lush landscapes, authentic villages, dramatic mountains and a gastronomy that truly delights.
For those looking for a different side of Spain, greener, calmer and wonderfully authentic, Asturias is a destination not to miss.
From Belgium, the region is easy to reach by plane or by car for those who enjoy a scenic road trip. Yet once you arrive, it feels like stepping into a completely different Spain. Nature takes center stage, traditions are proudly preserved, and every village seems to tell its own story.
Oviedo and Avilés: history, elegance and charm
My journey began in Oviedo, the elegant capital of Asturias. It is a city best explored on foot, with a beautifully preserved historic center that invites you to slow down and wander.
As you stroll through its cobbled streets and lively squares, you quickly understand why Oviedo is so beloved by Spaniards themselves. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and genuinely authentic.
I also discovered Avilés, a city that perfectly blends tradition with modern architecture. Its charming historic center features graceful arcades and picturesque streets full of character. In striking contrast stands the impressive Niemeyer Centre, a bold contemporary cultural complex that adds an artistic and modern dimension to the city.
Cudillero: a charming coastal fishing village
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Cudillero, a picturesque fishing village nestled in a natural bay.
Built along a steep hillside, the colorful houses appear to cascade down toward the harbor like an amphitheater overlooking the sea.
Walking through its narrow streets while watching fishing boats gently rocking in the harbor, you immediately feel that this is a place where authenticity still thrives.
Spectacular nature: the Picos de Europa
Asturias is also a paradise for nature lovers. During my stay, I explored the breathtaking Picos de Europa National Park, one of the most spectacular landscapes in northern Spain.
Towering mountain peaks, lush valleys, crystal-clear rivers and tranquil lakes create scenery that feels almost untouched. It’s an incredible destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Several routes of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage also pass through the region, attracting travelers from around the world.
A rich and authentic gastronomy
Another highlight of Asturias is its delicious local cuisine, deeply rooted in regional traditions.
One of the most famous products is Cabrales cheese, a powerful blue cheese aged in natural mountain caves. The region is also renowned for its cider, which is far more than just a drink, it is a true cultural ritual.
The cider is poured from a height to oxygenate it before drinking, creating a small performance that makes every meal feel special.
A refreshing alternative to southern Spain
Thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Asturias enjoys pleasantly mild summers. This makes it an excellent alternative for travelers who want to explore Spain while avoiding the intense heat of the south.
Green landscapes, fresh sea air and comfortable temperatures make it perfect for exploring villages, hiking through nature or relaxing along the coast.
A destination waiting to be discovered
After exploring this remarkable region, one thing is certain: Asturias is one of Spain’s best-kept secrets.
Between historic cities like Oviedo and Avilés, enchanting coastal villages like Cudillero, the spectacular landscapes of the Picos de Europa and its authentic gastronomy, every day here brings a new discovery.
Asturias is not just a destination. It is an experience, elegant, authentic and wonderfully different. A side of Spain that still feels untouched… and absolutely worth discovering.
