Winter destinations
Snow or sunshine?

Reading time: 5 min

From snow-covered landscapes and atmospheric cities to tropical beaches and winter sun, winter does not have to look the same for everyone. Maybe you dream of seeing the Northern Lights above a white landscape, or perhaps you would rather swap thick jumpers for flip-flops. These are some of our favourite destinations for experiencing winter entirely your own way.

Where winter becomes just that little bit more magical

Some destinations are at their most beautiful when the temperatures drop. Not to escape winter, but to fully embrace it.

In Finnish Lapland, winter can feel as though it has come straight out of a fairytale. Vast forests disappear beneath a thick blanket of snow, reindeer and huskies become part of the scenery, and once evening falls, the search for the Northern Lights begins. During the day, head out on a husky safari or snowmobile adventure, while the evenings are all about enjoying the silence and unique atmosphere of the far north.

Iceland shows a completely different side of winter. Think impressive glaciers, black-sand beaches, steaming hot springs and waterfalls set against a spectacular winter backdrop. With a bit of luck, you may also catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. And after a full day of exploring, few things feel better than relaxing in a naturally heated pool.

Alberta, in Canada, is another paradise for winter lovers. In the Canadian Rockies, snow-covered mountain peaks, frozen lakes and vast coniferous forests alternate one after another. You can ski, go winter hiking or simply take in the impressive scenery. Banff and Jasper National Parks in particular reveal a very special side of themselves in winter.

Iconic cities in their finest winter look

Not everyone heads into nature for a winter break. Some cities become even more appealing during the coldest months of the year.

New York is perhaps the best-known example. During the festive season, the streets fill with twinkling lights, spectacular Christmas window displays and a lively atmosphere. Ice skating at Rockefeller Center, walking through Central Park or admiring the city from a rooftop: New York has something truly special during the winter months.

A completely different atmosphere awaits in Québec City. Its historic streets, stone façades and snow-covered rooftops give the city an almost European character. During the famous Québec Winter Carnival, the city really comes alive with winter activities and festivities. Add a hot chocolate and a stroll through the old town, and you have all the ingredients for an atmospheric winter break.

Two cities, two completely different experiences, but both well worth visiting in winter.

A dose of vitamin D just a few hours away

Prefer milder temperatures? You do not necessarily need to travel to the other side of the world.

Tenerife enjoys a pleasant climate even during the winter months. But the island has much more to offer than beaches alone. Explore the spectacular volcanic landscapes of Teide National Park, discover charming villages or head along the rugged northern coast. If you like combining relaxation with adventure, this is an excellent choice.

Madeira is a dream destination for nature lovers and hikers. Green mountain landscapes, dramatic cliffs and the famous levada walks make the island wonderfully diverse. After an active day, enjoy the local cuisine or settle down on a terrace in Funchal. Do not expect tropical heat, but you can count on a mild climate and plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors.

The Azores also deserve a place on the list. This Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic surprises visitors with volcanic lakes, hot springs, green hills and spectacular coastal scenery. The weather can be more changeable, especially in winter, but that only adds to the islands’ rugged character.

Chasing the winter sun in Asia

For those willing to travel a little further, Asia offers a special combination of warm temperatures, fascinating cultures and impressive nature.

Thailand remains a favourite for anyone looking to swap winter for tropical temperatures. From the lively streets and temples of Bangkok to the beaches and islands in the south, the country offers countless possibilities. Combine a round trip with a few days by the sea and you get a wonderful balance between exploring and relaxing.

Sri Lanka is another destination where nature, culture and beaches go hand in hand. Visit ancient temples, travel past lush tea plantations, spot wildlife on safari and finish your trip by the coast. The south and west of the island are particularly attractive during our winter months.

In Vietnam, the ideal itinerary strongly depends on the region. While the north can be quite cool during winter, the south generally enjoys warmer temperatures. From the lively streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta and the beaches of Phu Quoc, there is plenty to discover.

And then there is Japan, where winter has a charm all of its own. Think snow-covered mountain villages, traditional hot springs and atmospheric temples. Cities such as Tokyo and Osaka also have an incredible amount to offer during the colder months. Japan may not be the destination for those looking for tropical temperatures, but it is ideal for travellers who want to combine culture with a truly special winter experience.
