Exploring the Albanian Alps

In northern Albania lie the majestic Albanian Alps – a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. This mountain range, also known as the “Accursed Mountains” or Prokletije, is one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Balkans. During your journey, you can visit mountain villages such as picturesque Theth, where traditional stone houses blend seamlessly into the dramatic scenery of sharp peaks and deep valleys. The hiking trail between Theth and Valbona is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, offering unforgettable panoramic views.

Albania’s rich history

Few countries in Europe have a history as fascinating and diverse as Albania. Throughout your trip, you’ll encounter traces of Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and communist influences. From the ancient ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the south, to the bunkers from the communist era scattered across the country – each era has left its mark. The ancient city of Apollonia boasts a beautifully preserved Roman amphitheatre, while towns such as Berat and Gjirokastër, with their Ottoman architecture, take you back in time. These historical layers make your road trip through Albania a journey through history.

Culinary surprises of Albanian cuisine

Albanian cuisine is a hidden gem that you should definitely experience. Influenced by Mediterranean, Balkan, and Ottoman traditions, it offers a delightful mix of flavours. Try traditional dishes such as tavë kosi (baked lamb with yoghurt), fërgesë (pepper-cheese dish) or byrek (savoury filo pastry). Coastal areas are known for fresh seafood, while mountain regions offer delicious cheeses, grilled meats, and wild mushrooms. Don’t forget to try raki, the local brandy often homemade, or a cup of strong Albanian coffee. Local markets in cities like Korçë and Shkodër are perfect for tasting fresh products and meeting local farmers.

Visit Tirana, the vibrant capital

No trip to Albania is complete without a visit to its colourful capital, Tirana. This dynamic city perfectly reflects the transformation Albania has undergone. Start at Skanderbeg Square, named after the national hero, and visit the National Historical Museum with its striking mosaic façade. Stroll through the trendy Blloku district – once reserved exclusively for communist leaders, now a lively area full of cafés, restaurants, and nightlife. Visit the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the Orthodox-Catholic Cathedral, symbols of the country’s religious tolerance. The many colourful buildings, part of former mayor Edi Rama’s “Colourful Tirana” project, give the city a cheerful and unique appearance.

Discover the Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera, stretching from Vlorë to Sarandë, offers one of the most spectacular coastlines in the Mediterranean. Here you’ll find crystal-clear waters, hidden bays, and authentic fishing villages. Dhërmi and Himara are popular seaside spots with beautiful beaches and a lively summer atmosphere. Ksamil, near the Greek border, surprises with its tropical-looking beaches and tiny islands you can swim to. Be sure to visit Llogara National Park, where the mountains plunge into the sea and from the Llogara Pass (1,027 m) you can enjoy breathtaking views over the Ionian Sea.

Why a road trip through Albania?

A road trip through Albania is a unique opportunity to explore one of Europe’s least-known but most fascinating countries. The combination of stunning nature, rich history, and genuine hospitality makes Albania a special destination. With your rental car, you have the freedom to travel at your own pace — from rugged northern mountains to idyllic southern beaches. You can stop in remote villages where traditions are still alive and stay in authentic accommodations that offer a glimpse of real Albanian life. Unlike mass tourism destinations, here you’ll feel like an explorer.

Visiting Albania’s neighbours

Albania’s strategic location in the heart of the Balkans makes it the perfect base for exploring neighbouring countries. From northern Albania, you can easily visit Montenegro, with its spectacular Bay of Kotor and medieval towns. To the east lies North Macedonia, where Lake Ohrid — shared with Albania — is more than worth a visit. The old town of Ohrid, with its many churches and Byzantine architecture, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. If you have more time, you can also cross the southern border into Greece and take the ferry from Sarandë to the charming island of Corfu.
