Travel Documents
  • All Belgian nationals travelling on a Belgian passport (children and babies included) must be in possession of an international e-passport (electronic) containing min. 2 blank pages, valid for at least 1 day after their return home. All travellers to Canada must purchase an eTA or electronic Travel Authorisation online via the official website cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp prior to entering Canadian territory via its airports. Price: 7 CAD or +/- 5 Euros. Your eTA is valid for 5 years and linked to your passport number. This implies that as soon as your passport expires, so does your eTA.

  • To save time at Customs and Immigration in Canada, you can download the CanBorder eDeclaration app before your arrival. You will then receive a QR-code that remains valid for 24 hours. Thanks to the scanning of the QR code, you do not have to re-enter your data on the screen at the Customs counters. You can download via the Apple Store app or Google Play app.

  • Please note: A credit card is required upon check-in at the hotels and also when renting a car. All cross-border travellers with the USA must on top be in possession of an international passport and an ESTA. The digital passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the set date of your return flight. The electronic travel authorization must be purchased online by means of a personal credit card via the official link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ (14 USD on 20JAN2015). Your ESTA is valid for max. 2 years. Should your international passport expire within that period, so does your ESTA as it is linked to your passport number. We strongly recommend you to print out the Esta- or Eta permit and to have it on you while you travel to avoid problems.

  • Travellers with a non-Belgian nationality and / or travellers travelling on a foreign passport are invited to spontaneously report this matter to the Connections travel consultant and shall contact their respective embassy (s) or Consulate (ate) to obtain the latest updates concerning all current travel requirements and documents.

Western Canada with children of all ages

Western Canada is the perfect destination for a family vacation with children of all ages. Its diverse landscapes offer something for everyone: teenagers can enjoy thrilling adventures like white-water rafting in Jasper, while younger kids will love short hikes around the stunning lakes. The driving distances are manageable for families, with plenty of scenic stops where children can stretch their legs and play. In the national parks, rangers organize special programs that teach kids about Canadian wildlife and nature through fun, hands-on experiences, while the cities of Vancouver and Victoria offer a wealth of family-friendly attractions for variety and balance.

Vancouver highlights for families

Vancouver is a paradise for families exploring Western Canada. Start your city adventure in Stanley Park, where kids can visit the Vancouver Aquarium, ride the miniature train, or bike along the scenic Seawall. The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is a thrilling experience for all ages as you cross the swaying bridge high above the Capilano River. On Granville Island, children will love the Kids Market, while parents can sample local treats at the Public Market. At Science World, interactive exhibits make learning about science exciting and fun. Vancouver blends city excitement with natural beauty, making it the perfect starting point for your Western Canada family adventure.

Wildlife spotting in the national parks

One of the highlights of your Western Canada family tour will be spotting wildlife in their natural habitat. In Jasper National Park, moose, black bears, and mountain goats often appear along roads and trails. Young explorers will be amazed the first time they see a majestic grizzly bear or a herd of bighorn sheep in the wild. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for wildlife viewing. In Banff National Park, you can often see animals from the comfort of your car, ideal for families with small children. Park rangers also host junior programs where kids learn about animal behavior and habitats—an educational experience they’ll never forget.

Family-friendly activities in the Rockies

The Canadian Rockies offer countless family-friendly activities. In Banff, unwind together in the soothing Banff Upper Hot Springs, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. The Banff Gondola takes you effortlessly to the top of Sulphur Mountain, where even the youngest hikers can enjoy spectacular panoramas. In Jasper, a boat cruise on Maligne Lake is a calm and scenic adventure for all ages. At Lake Louise, families can rent a canoe in summer to explore the turquoise waters, or go ice skating in winter when the lake freezes over. The Columbia Icefield Skywalk provides a thrilling yet safe way to experience the glaciers, with informative displays designed especially for children.

Practical tips for traveling through Western Canada with kids

Planning a family tour through Western Canada requires some preparation. Choose accommodations with pools so kids can unwind after a day on the road. Bring entertainment for car rides, but encourage children to watch the scenery—you never know when you might spot a bear or moose! Always carry enough water, snacks, and sun protection, even on cloudy days. The Canada Parks Discovery Pass is well worth the investment if you plan to visit multiple national parks. Allow time to adjust to the time difference and take it easy during the first few days. The best travel period is from June to September, when the weather is pleasant and all routes and family-friendly outdoor activities are accessible.
