Malta: a small country with endless discoveries, from history to beaches and dolce vita

Malta is located south of Sicily and consists of three islands: Malta, the main island, Gozo, the peaceful little sister, and Comino, which is largely uninhabited. Sunny beaches, 7000 years of intriguing history and vibrant nightlife: there is plenty to discover and experience in this fascinating tiny gem.

Distance in Malta is an awesome term as you can reach all corners in a maximum of half an hour by car, this allows you to plan your trip at a relaxed pace, with (or without) a rental car.

Highlights of Malta During Your Tour

During your Malta tour, you’ll discover a wealth of highlights packed into a relatively small area. The capital Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, impresses with its imposing Grand Harbour, beautiful baroque architecture and lively squares. In the north, Mellieha Bay beckons with the largest sandy beach on the island, perfect for a refreshing swim. Marsaxlokk, a picturesque fishing village in the south, enchants visitors with its colourful luzzus (traditional fishing boats) and cosy seafood restaurants along the waterfront. Each major site lies only a short distance from the next, making it easy to combine several highlights in a single day.

Discovering the Island of Gozo

Gozo, Malta’s sister island, is an essential part of your Malta tour. This rustic island, accessible by ferry from Malta, has a completely different atmosphere. You’ll find authentic villages where time seems to stand still. The capital Victoria, with its impressive citadel, offers fascinating insights into the island’s rich history. Ramla Bay’s red sandy beaches invite relaxation, while the rock formations at Dwejra showcase breathtaking natural beauty. Gozo is also known for its handwoven fabrics and artisanal products found at local markets. A day trip to Gozo adds an extra dimension of tranquillity and authenticity to your Malta tour.

Accommodation in Malta

During your Malta tour, you’ll stay in comfortable 4-star hotels that serve as the perfect base. Most accommodations feature swimming pools where you can cool off after a day of exploration. In Valletta, you’ll find elegant boutique hotels housed in centuries-old palaces, while coastal towns such as Mellieha and St. Julian’s offer modern resorts overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. For travellers seeking an authentic Maltese experience, charming guesthouses in traditional limestone buildings are available, often with rooftop terraces offering panoramic views. Thanks to the island’s compact size, you’re never far from the main sights, no matter where you stay during your Malta tour.

Malta’s Past and Historical Sites

Malta’s past is fascinating and deeply rooted. The megalithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, predating the Egyptian pyramids. In Mdina, the old capital, you can stroll through medieval streets where the Order of St. John ruled for centuries. The Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua – tell the story of the Great Siege by the Ottomans in 1565. In Rabat, you can visit St. Paul’s Catacombs, an underground complex of corridors and tombs from the Roman period. Malta’s history is also reflected in the many forts and defensive structures along the coastline, silent witnesses to the island’s strategic position in the Mediterranean throughout the centuries.

Planning Your Malta Self-Drive Tour

A self-drive tour of Malta offers the freedom to set your own pace and stop wherever and whenever you like. With a rental car, you can easily explore hidden coves, remote villages and panoramic viewpoints often missed by group tours. You can spontaneously decide to stay longer at a place that particularly appeals to you, such as the enchanting Blue Grotto or a quiet fishing village. Culinary enthusiasts can discover authentic restaurants on their own, away from the tourist crowds. Your itinerary is fully customisable to match your interests—whether you’re fascinated by history, culture, nature or gastronomy. A self-drive tour of Malta provides ultimate flexibility to discover the island entirely on your own terms.
