Our journey began in Auckland, the country’s largest city. After the long flight, we took some time to ease into the trip and discover the city. From the Sky Tower, we enjoyed breathtaking views over the harbour and surrounding bays. We also took the short ferry ride to Devonport, a charming seaside town that perfectly reflects New Zealand’s relaxed way of life.

Travelling inland, we reached Hobbiton, the famous movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Even visitors who have never seen the films are often captivated by the fairytale atmosphere. From there, we drove through vast kiwi plantations towards Rotorua, a region renowned for its Māori culture and geothermal activity. Bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers and volcanic landscapes offer a fascinating reminder that nature is very much alive here.

The crossing to the South Island was another unforgettable experience. Sailing through the Marlborough Sounds feels less like a ferry journey and more like a scenic cruise. Forested hills, hidden coves and endless waterways create some of the most beautiful views in the country.

Continuing along the rugged West Coast, we stopped at Cape Foulwind, where even a simple lunch overlooking the ocean became a memorable experience. Via Hokitika, we eventually reached Franz Josef Glacier. The glacier also serves as a visible reminder of the effects of climate change, yet it remains one of the most fascinating places to witness the power of nature up close.

From Queenstown, we travelled to Te Anau, often considered the gateway to Fiordland National Park. Here, the landscapes become even more dramatic. We visited the famous glowworm caves and enjoyed a cruise across the lake aboard a beautifully restored sailing vessel. The tranquillity, silence and scenery make Te Anau a place that stays with you long after you leave.

Our journey ended in Christchurch, a city that has reinvented itself following the earthquakes and now offers a fascinating mix of modern architecture, green spaces and creative urban development.

What I love most about New Zealand is the balance between nature, culture and adventure. The landscapes are breathtaking, but equally memorable are the welcoming people, the relaxed atmosphere and the excellent food and wine scene. From the moment you arrive, you feel genuinely welcome.
